Frank Kaminsky is the NBA's most unique rookie

TAG

NBA CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Frank Kaminsky wanders around the Hornets locker room rapping random Future lyrics. Or maybe it’s Jeezy. He calls point guard Kemba Walker “Dad.” He has a special handshake — an actual old-school handshake — with veteran big man Spencer Hawes. He did “The Dougie” in China.“That was the funniest thing I’ve seen in my life,” fellow Hornets rookie Aaron Harrison said of the moment before a preseason game.  MORE: Greatest Charlotte Hornets ever | NBA scout on top rookiesThe NBA is full of funny players. Trash-talk builds a quick wit, and if you give enough young men millions of dollars, some are going to have fun with it. Kaminsky is a different sort, though. “He’s got a unique mind, I guess I could say,” Hornets veteran Brian Roberts said. “Then guys like Al (Jefferson) kind of egg him on a little bit to keep it going, say some off-the-wall stuff.” “Unique” defines Kaminsky. He’s not an on-court jester, though. He’s the NCAA player of the year who led Wisconsin to consecutive Final Fours. He’s the prospect the Hornets wouldn’t let slip out of their hands despite “a ‘Godfather’ offer” from the Celtics, who wanted Justise Winslow with the No. 9 pick in the strong 2015 NBA Draft. He’s the 7-foot center who used to be a point guard, who spent four years in college but was invisible for half of them, who now has become a go-to option on the second unit of a team desperate to make the playoffs.Kaminsky’s skill set stands out as much as his temperament. He doesn’t fit neatly into the roles assigned to today’s (or any day’s) power forwards. He wants to dribble at the top of the key or to shoot from the wings or to make the big play. And the weirdest part — he can do some of that already.“You don’t want to start saying ‘Nowitzki’ because that’s not fair,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said, referring to the Mavericks’ Dirk. “But there’s not many guys his size I’ve ever seen in this league that have his feel for the game offensively. He’s 7 feet tall, and he drives by almost everybody. And as he gets stronger, I think a lot of the things he did in college, you’ll see.”For now, we are seeing an intriguing rookie fighting his way to an increased role, with equal parts success and failure. That’s normal at this time of the season, as rookies start to assert themselves. The past and the future, though, set Kaminsky apart. The late-bloomerTwenty-two is young by any reasonable measure, other than that of an NBA rookie. Kaminsky is more than five months older than teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who is in his fourth NBA season. These types of things add up. When the Hornets drafted Kaminsky, they hedged on early playing time. The front office and coaching staffs didn’t want to put pressure on him, knowing he’d need time to develop his body. But they also knew they had drafted a player who had thoroughly outplayed Kentucky’s Karl-Anthony Towns (the first pick in the draft) and Willi[……]

Five ways Billy Donovan has made the Thunder unstoppable

TAG

NBA The Thunder have almost done it again. After beating the Spurs in the Western Conference semifinals, they’ve pushed the Warriors to the brink of elimination by shocking them on the road in Game 1 and then blowing them out in back-to-back games on their home court. One more victory, and they’ll get an opportunity to compete for an NBA title for the fifth time in franchise history.MORE: Avoid these excuses, Warriors fans For obvious reasons, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant get much of the credit for the Thunder’s success — they’re a matchup nightmare for any team, to which their average of 53.7 points per game in the playoffs speaks. But giving them all the credit would be an injustice to Billy Donovan, since he has out-coached both Gregg Popovich and Steve Kerr by trusting lineups he rarely used in the regular season and putting role players in positions to succeed. For a first-year head coach, that’s a remarkable feat.Despite leading the Gators to two championships, Donovan didn’t look capable of this earlier in the season when the Thunder were struggling to close out games. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the specific adjustments he has made in these playoffs and why they’ve been so effective against the historically elite Warriors. Establishing Andre Roberson as a scoring threatRoberson shouldn’t realistically be able to stay on the floor for long periods of time against a team like the Warriors, and yet he played 40 minutes in a crucial Game 4. Similar to how they shut down the Grizzlies in 2014 by putting Andrew Bogut on Tony Allen, the Warriors have used Draymond Green as a free safety when guarding Roberson, but the Thunder have figured out ways to counter that by putting Roberson in scoring positions. The most obvious solution is to have Roberson set a screen on the ball handler for a pick-and-roll. It puts his defender in the middle of the play and prevents the team from clogging the paint with multiple defenders, which tends to provide just enough space for Westbrook and Durant to attack the basket.BIRDSONG: Thunder knew they were betterBeing 6-7 with a 6-11 wingspan comes with its perks, too. With his combination of height, speed and athleticism, Roberson can make the simple play out of the pick-and-roll if two defenders trap the ball handler. At one point in Game 4, he popped to the 3-point line and quickly cut towards the basket for a dunk once he saw a path open up.The Thunder also have found success with Roberson roaming the baseline for dump-offs. With Durant and Westbrook commanding so much attention, defenders aren’t usually focused on Roberson because they assume he’ll stand on the 3-point line and wait for a kick out. It’s why one of the Thunder’s favorite plays is for him to cut backdoor when his defender isn’t paying attention.Watch, for example, as Green gets caught ball-watching with Durant attacking Stephen Curry on a switch at the top of the pe[……]

Knicks' best move in 2016 NBA free agency is to not overspend for once

The Knicks need to add more quality players without the benefit of a draft pick or a ton of cap space. Their possibilities are also dependent on what Arron Afflalo and Derrick Williams decide on their player options. MORE: Ranking the 23 best available NBA free agentsLet’s take a look at their free agents, salary cap space and assets for this summer before breaking down what needs to be done. Potential free agents: Arron Afflalo ($8 million player option), Langston Galloway (restricted), Lance Thomas (unrestricted), Derrick Williams ($4.6 million player option), Kevin Seraphin (unrestricted), Tony Wroten (non-guaranteed), Cleanthony Early (restricted), Sasha Vujacic (unrestricted) and Louis Amundson (unrestricted).Likely cap space: $25.6 million.Realistic maximum cap space (using $92 million estimate): $29.6 million.2016 NBA Draft assets: None. (First-round pick owed to the Raptors, via the Nuggets, and second round pick owed to Houston.)MORE: SN’s latest NBA Mock Draft: Sorry, Knicks fansIt says something about how far away the Knicks were in 2014-15 that even with a massive talent influx last offseason, the team still needs substantially more to be competitive.Carmelo Anthony looms largest in a summer without a draft pick. One of Jackson’s earliest moves was offering Anthony a contract that included a no-trade clause and a trade bonus along with a near-maximum salary. That gives Anthony complete control over any possible departure from the Knicks. As NBC Sports’ Dan Feldman has laid out before, Anthony has a good financial reason not to want to approve any trade possibilities before July, when the league year changes over and that trade bonus substantially increases, which limits the Knicks further.Do the Knicks want to trade Anthony? That remains up for debate, but he appeared occasionally committed to and occasionally frustrated by the Knicks’ rebuilding last season.
