Carmelo Anthony blew his chance to have Chris Bosh's role in the Heat's Big 3

NBA

Chris Bosh’s two NBA championships rings could have been Carmelo Anthony’s. But the guy can’t take a hint.

Call it stubbornness, greed or simply misreading obvious signals, Anthony made a decision in 2006 that prevented him from joining good friends LeBron James and Dwyane Wade in Miami in 2010. If it wasn’t evident enough — Chris Bosh, who may very well be better than Anthony, never quite fit into James and Wade’s bromance — the message is loud and clear in Bleacher Report’s in-depth look at Anthony and James’ multifaceted friendship and rivalry.

Here’s the quick version: In 2006, the members of the 2003 NBA Draft class were up for extensions. That included James, Anthony, Wade and Bosh. James was the best of the group at that point, but it was close, and he urged Wade and Anthony to take three-year extensions (with a player option for a fourth year).

"And, uh, Melo," James recalled to Bleacher Report, "Melo took the five-year."

Bosh, whose role in the plan seems more a matter of convenience in retrospect, did take that three-year deal. That led to him being part of what Anthony refers to as a “plot.” Only …

So, why didn't they tell you?

"I guess they was telling me, in their own way: 'Take the three-year deal.' "

The quote is relayed to James, who affirms, "We were."

The story is loaded with details like that, such as how easily James reads Anthony’s mood and details on their first real conversations.

"I really hope that, before our career is over, we can all play together," James told Bleacher Report. "At least one, maybe one or two seasons—me, Melo, D-Wade, CP—we can get a year in. I would actually take a pay cut to do that."

Of course, two-thirds of that could have happened. 'Melo just missed the hint.
