Stephen Curry deserves to say he's the best player on the planet, but what does it really mean?

Steph Curry, the reigning NBA MVP and NBA champion, is playing the best basketball of anyone on the planet.

But is he the best basketball player on the planet? Regardless of his stats or performances, it is hard to remove LeBron James from that mantle. His physical build, elite athleticism and ability to carry an entire team on his shoulders seems to be the one obstacle standing in Curry's way.

But if you ask Curry who the best player on the planet is, his answer should come as no surprise. From an interesting Q&A session with Time Magazine:

Q: Are you the best player in the world right now?

A: In my mind, yes. That’s how I have confidence out there that I can play at a high level every night. I don’t get into debates, arguing with people about why I am versus somebody else. I feel like anybody who’s at the level I’m trying to be at, if you don’t think that when you’re on the floor, then you’re doing yourself a disservice."

While Curry doesn't want to take part in the debate — and that's completely acceptable — it is a fun debate to be had.

Is being the best player in the NBA the same as being the best player on the planet? What does that even mean?

Perhaps the planet's best player mantle is given to someone, even if they are not the front runner for MVP, based on a fictitious one-on-one tournam

ent featuring the best players on the planet. Or perhaps it's a title given to the player that someone would want to start a franchise around.

Would LeBron James be the favorite to win a one-on-one tournament featuring the best players on the planet? Yes.

Would LeBron James be the likely answer to "Which player would you want to build your franchise around?" Yes.

Is Steph Curry the NBA's best player in 2015? Absolutely.
